The uniforms of professionals inspire the imagination of youngsters. Kids want to be firemen, soldiers, race car drivers, doctors, nurses. All have their specific clothes. Does a sister in street clothes capture the imagination? I don't see how.

Sister Mary Pantsuit will scream at the sky and then lecture you on the “glorious” reforms that have reduced her order’s membership from 1100 to 200 and the average age of 78!

Bee here:

Last year I started volunteering at the local Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home (St. Mary's in Chicago). All the Sisters wear a habit that comes to about mid-calf, and a veil that hides all of their hair. In general, they wear white in the summer, and brown in the winter.

I cannot tell you the hopefulness and security just seeing one of the Sisters in the hallway imparts to the residents, staff, family members, and volunteers. The Sisters dressed in habits sets them apart, and the immediate reaction is that God is near, regardless if the Sisters are paradigms of personal holiness or not. (In my opinion, they all are! :-) )

Even the non-Catholic residents seem to feel better when the Sisters are around and about.

The habit speaks volumes. It speaks of vows, and fidelity, and obedience, and love of God, and promises being kept. It's not a private matter. It is a very public matter, and it matters.

God bless.

"Glorious Reforms" = "Deathwish" for religious orders.

When I moved into this diocese (Savannah) it took me three years at my parish before I found out we had nuns. Care to guess why?
