Watched for a while....very ecumenical, lacked solemnity and gravity, too much music as entertainment. When living in Omaha, was part of the building and dedication of a new and magnificent church, St Vincent dePaul. It was a solemn occasion...dedication with great dignity befitting the moment a church is brought to life so to speak. Sorry to see what happened today in what has to be a most wonderful space.

Well Tom, at least, rubrics aside, the diocese has a center of worship that is vastly larger than its predecessor. Heck, the Episcopalians in that area don't even have their own cathedral (they had to use the Duke Chapel for the ordination of their new bishop July 15). I would trade that for what we have here in Atlanta, the dark, kind of gloomy Cathedral of Christ the King, which is woefully inadequate for the size of its congregation today---but not takers on trading that for the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah!!!

Tom Makin: Ditto, except that after watching this thing briefly, I just couldn't take it any more. So trendy and undignified, a depressing reminder of what's been done to the Church's once magnificent and solemn liturgy.

I'm curious as to what struck you as ecumenical and/or trendy about the Cathedral dedication Mass. I was there and I didn't see anything that I thought was inappropriate. I tend to be fairly conservative when it comes to Mass and the parish I am registered at is quite traditional for a Novus Ordo parish. Granted, most of the music was not Gregorian chant but the hymns were traditional for the most part. Catholics from other cultures were asked to wear their native dress, which I liked. I see that in my parish every Sunday. It serves as a reminder that the Church is universal.

Southern Catholic, if the Church was universal, the dedication Mass would have used Latin for the Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Gloria and Credo instead of the 2nd rate bilge employed. Your comment reflects how far the Church has fallen since Vatican Disaster II

The Church is universal, regardless of the language used in worship.

Some err in thinking that universal means uniformity in worship. It does not.

The correct understanding of universality is taught by the Church:

"First, the Church is catholic because Christ is present in her. "Where there is Christ Jesus, there is the Catholic Church." And, "Secondly, the Church is catholic because she has been sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole of the human race." (CCC 830, 831)

Can't argue with that. A few local parishes chant the Sanctus and Agnus Dei in Latin but I have only heard the Gloria chanted in Latin at my parish. We never sing it in English.
