LUTHERAN SATIRE AND CHURCH LIFE AND THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN MASS

I just copied this from Fr. Z's blog. It is funny, funny, but of course I have a dry sense of humor!

Wow. Latin Rite worship has become so much of a joke that even the Lutherans are making fun of us. I wonder if St. Peter ever thought he would see the day when heretics made fun of "Frank the hippy pope" and the Mass, and we're actually right!
Thank God there's no crisis in the Church!!

Latin rite worship started becoming a joke in the 1960s - remember Tom Lehrer's 'Vatican Rag', inspired by official sanction for the use of popular music styles in the liturgy?

The target of the 'Lutheran satire' is actually the Church of England, but it applies to us as well.

The Vatican Rag, by Tom Lehrer.

First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Do whatever steps you want, if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff.
Everybody say his own
Kyrie eleison,
Doin' the Vatican Rag.

Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.
If it is, try playin' it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!

So get down upon your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman,
Ave Maria,
Gee it's good to see ya,
Gettin' ecstatic an'
Sorta dramatic an'
Doin' the Vatican Rag!
